So lately I've been playing in a christian metal band and we're really just getting started. We only practice about once every 2 weeks or so until the holidays are over. None of us can ever remember how we played a song, so last practice I had this genius idea to record practice, so we can do a quick playback at the start of each practice to remember how it went. Also, it allows us to work on new songs without having to remember how the songs we already know went. Kinda handy really. It's helped me quite a bit, especially until we start playing and practicing enough to remember them. Anyone else video themselves for memory purposes or just to see how you're playing? ;D

We do record some of the practices just to see how we sound, bad mostly..lol
We did the hideous video at the holloween thing just for reference. It's always good to know how you sound whether good or bad so you can evaluate and change what doesn't work.

Yes video can help you out a lot to fine tune all your mess ups and help you progress your ability's. I have taken a lot of videos of myself to see what kinda player I am so I can work on the player I want to be, video works great for this.

Just remember the video/reccording is only as good as the source. I have some video we shot and it's terrible. I know we sounded better live but the cheezy video sound and people walking ion front of the camera and such really make it look bad. The recordings I made live off teh board at practice sound fantastic though.

Yeah I think it is because the mics on most camcorders are really crappy!!!!!!!!

If we could have gotten a mix off the board it would have been a lot better, plus they didn;t mic anything so there was no level control out front. Nothing like running off the headroom on the amps.

I like the live sound better than Memorex. It is nice to have a good sound come out the front stage to capture.

Sorry Jason, no support from here... I'm so good that I don't need to practice!
If I DID need to practice though and I was working on learning stuff or writing new material then yeah, recording would help. We used to use a cue sheet with the song structure written down:
INT - V - CH- V - CH - BR - CHx2 - OUT or similar

You know I was always a stickler for knowing the words, arrangement and ect,but I have seen many professionals using lyrics, books, ect. So when I do need words or cheat sheets I don't feel so bad.

I'll gig with a cheat sheet for the set order but unless it's a new song I don't bother with the arrangement cheat sheets at the actual gig. Playing at church though we have a full set of lyrics with chord chart that we use for every song. Always have... If I wasn't a lazy ass then I'd learn them all by heart and be good to go. But I AM a lazy ass LOL

Well, we've watched some of the videos back through the church P.A. and T.V.'s and it actually sounded good. For some reason, our lead singers computer won't recognize the format that the video camera records on so one of our guitarists dad is going to try to get it re-formatted so we can make copies to take home and practice with. ;D

I have played in front of concert size crowds to small bars on Beal Street. I will NEVER stop practicing.
