I have used them recently, so no great experience here. In the studio the drums were tuned to a degree such that they weren't necessary and I guess I'd have to say that if you want them for personal use in a practice space where the sound is only important to YOUR ears then fine. If live and the audience is the focus, then I've been of the opinion that cutting out all of the high end frequencies isn't necessarily a good thing. I don't believe the gels accomplish this entirely, but I'm not sure just how they sound "LIVE" so I haven't used them. I don't use studio rings or anything else like that either. I pick a head that suits my purpose and there is anything out there from a clear single ply to Evans Hydraulic so you got a range to choose from, and I choose to just go with that. That said, if I had a drum tech and sound man (yeah...RIGHT, thats gonna happen) to route all this stuff out and it was thought the gels would help deliver a better quality sound to an audience- I wouldn't hesitate to use them.

I use them all the time. In the studio and when I'm playing live. You can hear the tones of my drums in the recordings if you go to my band pages myspace page at: myspace.com/doublebarrel65804 I'm also using Evans EC2 heads with the Gel and I use two Gels on my snare! You'll find out that one just doesn't get the job done. You can use them on cymbals as well. They are pretty neat...I keep them on my drums all the time and you can take them off and wash them and keep using them to a point!!!! After a while they start to turn into like gum or something and I dont know if it because of heat or what but I have had to buy new ones after a year of use. I still like them and recommend them to everyone if you like the sound I got out of them using them. I'm working on trying to get the best Bass Drum sound now. It never ends! LOL

I know how that goes. It is expected that they will wear out, just like everything else does, but a year, that is pretty good. plus they are pretty cheap so i might pick up a set.

Try one on your ride cymbal too. If you have like a smaller tom like a 10 inch or smaller you can cut it in half and use half on the smaller toms. That is my recommendation, but you can try it how ever you like. I guess depends on how muffled you like your tom's to be.
