Well my two in order are Peart and Dave weck. I for one am another that has "NO EAR" for metal. Those guys just sound like a carbon copy of each others to me. Dave Weckl has the most amazing approach to drumming. His dynamics are staggering, his ability in playing odd time signatures is erie. Neal Peart and Dave Weckl are truly in a class of their own.
As far as funk drumming,,,,,, Willy Green is the master

Of the guys mentioned, I like Peart, of course and Weckl. I too just don't go for the whole speed metal thing, I've heard Dragon Force and do like the sound they get as a band but really don't care for the drumming (talented that he is without a doubt), its just annoying to me. I also like Steve Smith and JoJo Mayer as well as several others. Nice kit there Robo-

Do they have to be living? Keith Moon was the reason i wanted to get into drums. I do agree the Buddy Rich is a great drummer. But what about Pete Best? (j/k) and im not into metal of anykind but you have to Give Dragonforce the respect they deserve.

Neil Peart has always been my favorite for many years, but I am surprized no one has mentioned Carter Beauford form Dave Mathews Band. He is quite amazing and looks like he is having a great time playing.

I really like Carters style. I don't care all that much for DMB but would absolutely love to see them perform in the manner a brother of mine saw them one time. Apparently it was more of a huge jam session as Dave Matthews ended up doing very little singing- its his vocals that I don't care for all that much. He apparently came out and sang a few-several songs but then the band as a whole jammed for most of the time alotted. That would be great IMO

I agree vanman, I am not a DMB fan either, but one of the guys in the band wanted to learn "Ants Marching". B4 that, I had never listened to DMB at all. During the process of learning the song I was impressed with Carter's playing, then I saw a concert on Direct TV and I still do not like DMB, but enjoy listening and watching Carter.

You know.... why is bands all think they need a front man , now I'm not a singer and really do enjoy good vocalls but hands down I'd say 100% of the time, or nearly so, the best part of any concert to me is gonna be when a band plays a song and extends it for a few to several minutes for the band to just jam.
