Well gang, I was going to build one, ended up buying one. Bought a lesser expensive Meinl Cajon with Siam Oak faceplate. The snares run the length of the inside faceplate. These are tunable from the bottom. I have never owned or played one of these and after 30+ years of playing drums, I have the rhythm of the beats down OK, but cannot get a good sound out of it. I know there is to be a certain amount of rattle from the snares, but I am getting the rattle wherever I play along with an annoying buzz. Hard to get a good bass sound with that annoying buzz. Any tips you can offer up would be appreciates. I am playing the Cajon for a wedding gig this weekend and sure would like to get my arms around the tuning of this thing. Thanks in advance.

I've never messed with them much either, but after watching them being used in a couple of American Idol performances, I think it would be perfect for when Ron is playing at a coffee shop of some other semi-quiet, small, venue.

I thought you were talking about spicy food from Lousiana...but I guess that is Cajun instead of Cajon.... ;D

I've not had on either...I've seen them played before! I would think it would be alot like a conga drum to play....Like to have one my self! Do acoustic versions of songs using one!

You might just give a call to The Percussion Shop, if they don't have a handle on it they should know who in the area probably would.

The drum is kind of like playing a table top. Everyone is a great table top drummer, right? The closer you play towards the top corners, the tighter the sound. More towards the center, the bassier the sound. There are guitar-like strings that run the vertical length of the inside front of the drum, which are tunable. These strings give a "buzz" sound like you would get from a snare drum. But I am getting an annoying buzz/ rattle along with the the regular snare buzz. No matter what tension I make the strings, I cannot get rid of the buzz/rattle. If I could get rid of that, I think I could grow to like it.
