Well, finally...hats off to a coworker who basically got these posted for me. This first one is an old(?) snare, most likely a knock off brand with Slingerland style hardware. It had the old blue sparkle wrap on it that was looking pretty bad at the time I decided to refinish it a couple years ago. This one was easy- cut the plastic on either side of the seam (1 glue joint) and the wrap literally popped off the drum. It appears to be a 3 ply mahoghany (luan probably) with reinforcement rings top and bottom. I replaced the lug bolts as well as the brass hardware seen on the original strainer. The hardest part on this refinish was getting all the rust of the chrome hardware, especially the strainer. Added a fiberskyn head for a bit of class and here you go... oh yeah and the artwork- thanks to my lovely and talented wife, I told her I wanted an African theme and she went to work with art stamps she has in her HUGE collection, thats ontop of some stain and several coats of polyurethane.
this project was way more involved, suffice it to say it involved parts of every step taken on the previous snare but that plastic was literally glued the ENTIRE surface of the shells, not just a simple vertical line at the seam. Now all the hardware was in good order so I simply replaced all that from stock. Once again my wife helped with brewing up the custom color for this one- I was shooting for Amethyst, I think she hit it pretty well. It was made from one of the colors of acrylic hobby paint in the small tubes you can buy at WalMart (where we got it) and she added some crystalized dye from an art set she had used to color the inside of Christmas globe ornaments. Powder + Acrylic = what you see on the refinished kit. Once again several coats of polyurethane and you have it- the kit sounds real nice too. Up to par with a Yammy Recording custom kit? Probably not, but its certainly original- one of my other coworkers has already teased me about the color but I don't care- they are killer IMHO This is kept currently in one of the kids' room. The drippy polka dotted walls??? We have an expressive 8 year old and thats all I'm gonna say about that!
