I have said in another thread,we took some 3/4" foam from Wallyworld and lined the head from the underside and made my sons drums sound fantastic. Just lay it in a circle about an inch from the edge and you're done. Total cost is $3 I'll post a pic tonight when I get home so you can see what I'm talking about.
The tone rings work good too, they tend to fly off while you play though. Logan had to tape his on,that's why we went with the foam.

Here's a closeup pic of the dampening we used. Looks good and works great,ad cheap. Good combination..lol You can see the snare has a tonering on it,and a piece of tape to keep it from fly9ing off. Now bear in mind Logan is a hard hitter, that might be the difference I don't know. Attachments:

Our drummer in OZ used to just stick some duct tape on his heads... Mind you, he was going through a new set of heads every 3 shows... Talk about a hard hitter! He'd dent the hell out of those things all the time.

Thanks guys I like the dampening idea. I just haven't tuned drums very much so I got a set of Aquarian rings, because I didn't want to take the head off. Bill at Percussion shop gave me the set for $8.02 I am so happy for thee sound now.
Thank you all for all the input. Rick

I don't know about that J, I did see the Drum Key downtown close to the Shrine the other day when I was lost.West of the square I think,I always get lost down there ... Maybe a Google will tell you the address. I know they used to have everything new and used drumwise, but it's been a hundred years so who knows.

as a pro drummer for 40 some years... The weather strip is good and round sounding, but I found that I had to play REALLY hard to project the drum sound. I am using Moon Gel dampeners now, sometimes on bigger drums 2 may be required. I am the drummer for Mr. Bobby Vinton (if any of you remember him). I am VERY knowledgeable about all aspects of Drumming from Teaching to teching. Feel free to contact me about anything you may have questions of, ( percussion wise). Later Dudes

In my 35+ years of playing, I have tried pretty much every type of dampening, and depending where you are playing, it may require different methods. In my rock band I use Evans EC2 heads and they provide just the right amount of dampening without chocking the head too much. In my kit at church, I use the Remo dampening rings because of the acoustic in the room is open and full of reverb. Play around with different things because only you know the sound you want. Try duct tape, try folding up a 4"x4" piece of cloth to the size of 1"x4" and tape it to the outer edge of the head, try oil filled heads, try Evans emad dampeners. For the record....after all the above methods, I still have not found the "perfect" sound. I have complete sets of oil filled, coated, black dots, evans emad dampeners sitting in my rehersal studio that I have tried and have not quite liked. I will say I do like the Aquarian II Superkick BD head. Also keep in mind that if you hear a sound on a CD and try to replicate it....good luck. Studios are filled with compressors, limiters and all sorts of gadgets that is hard to replicate with just the kit.
